Venue to Be Upgraded

18 February 2010, 6:41

Just days after hosting the final of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament, the venue of the 2010 World Championships, Ahoy Rotterdam, saw the beginning of a huge renovation project which will leave it roofless for a while. Construction projects just outside the arena have been on-going for a while now. Over the next seven months, the arena’s interior will be given a make-over. Ahoy will be given a new, higher roof, thus increasing seating capacity and improving both the interior climate and the acoustics. In addition, more room will be created for cafés and restaurants. The overhaul will be so thorough that the next time top tennis players from all over the world descend on Ahoy for the annual ABN AMRO Tournament, they will hardly recognise the place!

The 2010 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, to be held 16-24 October 2010, will be the first sporting event to be held in the newly revamped Ahoy arena. The passage between Ahoy Plaza and the arena will likely not be ready for use by October, nor will the newly-to-be-erected top stands (top right in the artist’s impression above), but in all other respects, Ahoy will boast Olympic-level facilities worthy of the world’s best gymnasts. Make sure you, too, attend the inaugural sporting event in the newly renovated Ahoy arena. Come and attend the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in October!
